IV Therapy Q&A

What is IV therapy?

IV therapy is an outpatient procedure that administers vitamins and minerals intravenously. When nutrients enter your bloodstream directly, they bypass your digestive tract, allowing for greater uptake by your cells. When your cells absorb more of the nutrients, you experience benefits, like increased energy, enhanced mental clarity, and better sleep.

What are the types of IV therapy?

Genesis Restorative Medicine offers several types of IV therapy, including:

Nutritional IV therapy

Nutritional IV therapy uses vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to help you achieve optimal well-being. Before recommending a specific type of therapy, your provider performs a physical exam and orders lab work, including blood tests and urinalysis.

After reviewing the results of your blood tests, your provider recommends a specific IV drip that aligns with your needs.

Infusional IV therapy

Infusion IV therapy uses growth factors like stem cells or exosomes. These cells are unique in that they seek out inflammation and can transform into any other type of cell in your body. That makes them ideal for treating soft tissue injuries to the muscles, tendons, or cartilage.

If you’re recovering from a sports or a work-related injury, Genesis Restorative Medicine might recommend infusional IV therapy.

What types of nutrients does IV therapy use?

The caring providers at Genesis Restorative Medicine use various nutrients for IV therapy, including:

  • Saline (a solution of water and sodium chloride that helps hydrate you)
  • Dextrose (a type of sugar)
  • Amino acids (building blocks of protein)
  • Vitamin B
  • Vitamin C
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Antioxidants

If you have an infection, your provider might also include antibiotics in the IV solution.

How long does IV therapy take?

At Genesis Restorative Medicine, IV therapy typically takes between 45-60 minutes, but it may take longer depending on the type of IV you need.*

While you’re receiving the drip, you can read, listen to music, watch TV, or take a nap. After the drip finishes, your Genesis Restorative Medicine provider carefully removes the needle, wraps your arm with a bandage, and sends you home.

What types of medical issues can benefit from IV therapy?

Genesis Restorative Medicine uses IV therapy to treat various conditions, including:

  • Dehydration
  • Jet lag
  • Fatigue
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Anemia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

You might also benefit from IV therapy if you experience a sports injury and tear a tendon or a ligament.
